The many parts of me…
I was born in Ontario and lived there for most of my life before moving to Vancouver to begin my studies in counselling psychology. My interest in psychology organically grew from my life experiences in childhood. I recognized from a young age how connected I was to how others around me were feeling. Although this increased awareness allowed me to connect genuinely with people, it also put me on a path to learn how to heal myself from the pain that inherently develops from relating so deeply with others. Through my own healing journey I have learned how helpful it can be to work with a counsellor in a way that nurtures and supports our innate ability to heal ourselves.
My approach to healing is grounded in viewing people as whole beings that have many parts. When one of those parts is out of alignment it can cause suffering and pain. This pain has meaning just as all behaviour has a purpose. While this pain and suffering may be what initially invites us to reach out for support, it can also allow us to grow, recognize our courage, and view our suffering with compassion and dignity. I believe in creating a counselling relationship that honours our experiences in childhood and allows for there to be a curiosity into how these experiences have shaped our lives today. I believe in using a non-pathological framework that honours the client’s courage to share their pain. It is also important to me to recognize the deep impacts that colonization has had on our community and to bring this awareness into the counselling relationship. In this way, we can shine a light on the spiritual injury, soul wounding, and ancestral hurt that so many have experienced and begin to balance all parts of ourselves on this journey of wellness.
I would like to also acknowledge the land that I share with my community in Yellowknife as it is located on Chief Drygeese Territory, traditional land of Yellowknifes Dene.
